There is not a single day that a firefighter is not called upon to protect citizens. These individuals have proven themselves to be particularly versatile and able to handle emergency tasks while keeping a level head. They are commissioned to serve and protect and are held in high esteem by the members of society. But how much do we actually know about firefighter jobs? Lets take a moment to discuss a little background information on this particular occupation.  First Responders Although firefighters are primarily responsible for putting out fires, they also handle several other types of emergency situations.They are considered to be first responders which means they are first on the scene of an emergency. If a car accident takes place are a water rescue is needed, firefighters are usually called first. Application and Education Those who apply for firefighter jobs are expected to be 18 years of age or older. 


They must have a high school diploma. Those who posses these qualifications are expected to taken an entrance exam, though some may attend college and enroll in a special program for potential firefighters. The entrance exam typically includes one written section, a medical examination and a strength test. Those who rank among the highest will then be called to participate in formal training. The Infrastructure Though firefighters have the same goal, different sectors operate under different commanding officers and have their own unique tasks. Tillers are responsible for guiding the truck ladders; hose operators have the job of connecting hoses to fire hydrants and pump operators are to inspect the hoses in order to ensure that the water is pumping through. Most fire stations work under a city government, however there are some that function on the behalf of private companies.  
 The Chain Of Command

There are three highly sought after positions and the longer a firefighter works, the more promotions he or she will be able to earn. A captain is responsible managing the station, performing inspections and equipment checks and training new recruits. The battalion chief manages the day by day operations. He coordinates responses and manages crews, supervising the captains who handle all of the firefighters. The fire chief is the top ranking official within any fire station. Depending on the department, the chief can be either appointed or elected to this particular position based on all of his proven tasks and merits. When this individual has been appointed, he or she is given the responsibility of having to manage all of the daily tasks within their fire station.
